Are Long haul flights better than short haul

Travelling to new and exotic places is a passion shared by most people. But most of the time, we have to take an aeroplane to reach these incredible new locations. It remains the fastest and most effective mode of transport. However, aeroplane travel can be costly, uncomfortable, and lengthy. So which is better – long haul or short haul?

I have been lucky enough to experience both long and short haul flights and while both offer something different I much prefer a long haul flight.

I did a poll over on my travel page last year and 60 per cent of people said they preferred short haul flights.

Why short haul

A short haul flight is one that takes up to 3 hours.

Taking a short haul flight is good if you are limited on the time you have, for example if you are wanting to go away just for the weekend. With new countries just a few hours away it makes for an easy option. As someone who can be impulsive, it is nice to have the option to go away for a few days and not have to plan too much.

pros

  • It allows you to be more flexible
  • You do not need to use your annual leave
  • Able to get away at the weekends
  • Makes it easier to socialise with families, partners and friends
  • flights are not as expensive

Cons

  • Flight times include early mornings and late evenings
  • You have to be sensible with your time meaning you may be restricted in the country you are visiting

Why long haul

These will always be my favourite type of flights from on board entertainment to slightly better comfort. These flights tend to be 6 hours or more.

Most long haul flights need that extra level of planning from Visas to jabs but are so worth it. With some of my bucket list destinations included.

pros

  • Enticing destinations
  • More time to experience the culture
  • Better comfort (too an extent)

cons

  • Flights can be more expensive
  • Layovers are included at times

While there is not a right or wrong answer for me long haul flights take the win.
